A POLICE officer has been taken to hospital with head injuries after his patrol car crashed through a central reservation this afternoon (Monday), flipping over and landing on its roof.

The incident happened at about 1.30pm on Hitchin Road in Stevenage, when at least 10 police vehicles, two fire engines and an ambulance were sent to the scene.

While details are currently sketchy, police believe the patrol car was in collision with a parked vehicle.

It is not know if the driver, who was the only person in the vehicle at the time, was responding to an emergency at the time of the crash.

He has been taken to Lister Hospital in Stevenage with head injuries.

Police have closed the road until further notice.
