POLICE are launching a crime prevention operation aimed at reducing the number of victims.

Saturnalia is a week-long process beginning on Monday, May 22, when residents of the Clothall Common estate in Baldock will be offered the chance to have a uniformed officer carry out a brief security survey on their homes.

The operation, headed by Letchworth GC, Baldock and Royston community inspector Geoff Camp, is free of charge and will see uniformed officers spend 15 minutes in the homes of residents.

Based on notes the officers will take, or on specific advice requested, each resident will receive a full security standard for their home.

PCSO Chris Nash, based at Baldock police station, said: "We firmly believe that if residents follow the advice given in the reports then it will significantly reduce the possibility of being a victim of burglary.

"Members of the North Hertford-shire crime prevention panel are supporting the operation and representatives from the panel will be assisting throughout the week-long campaign."

The team will be delivering invitation letters to Clothall residents with contact details on how to arrange for a survey to be carried out.

Although the operation is aimed at residents in the Clothall Common area this is a service which is offered throughout the year.

For people wanting a survey but who do not live within the common, or know someone vulnerable that would benefit from advice, contact PCSO Nash who will deal with requests for surveys from Baldock residents, on 01438 757388.

If you live in other areas contact your local police station and ask to speak to the community team.

Herts Fire and Rescue will be joining the police on May 25 to offer free home safety checks and free installation of a 10-year lifespan smoke detector.

To book a home safety check, call Baldock fire station on 01462 666900.
