POLICE are to crack down on youths who throw eggs at houses and vehicles after dark.

The move to reduce ant-isocial behaviour in areas of Biggleswade and Sandy comes after a number of incidents over Christmas and New Year.

In another incident youths uprooted shrubs and small trees and hurled them at a pensioner's front door in the Saxon Gate area of Biggleswade.

Police say many residents are angry and upset at the continued throwing of eggs.

Following the latest incidents, police are planning to mount more CCTV surveillance operations in an attempt to cut out the menace.

One area of Biggleswade that has been shelled the most is Windermere Drive.

According to one resident it has been going on for several months.

"It started in the autumn when I noticed egg shells around my car outside the house," said one resident who wished to remain anonymous.

"I understand several neighbours have had problems with eggs being thrown at their windows and one morning my husband noticed muddy footprints over his white car where someone had walked over it.

"On Bank Holiday Monday I heard eggs smashing against our living room window after I had noticed youths outside standing by our car.

"Residents are just hoping the police can stop this problem."

Pc Dave Needham, the beat officer for the area, said a number of youths had been spoken to about anti-social behaviour following one CCTV operation around 'the dip', an area where children congregate at night.

"We are aware of the egg throwing problem around Windermere Drive but it has also happened in Sandy," said Pc Needham.

"A number of youths have been spoken to and our advice to residents is don't react to it by confronting them but call us and we will deal with it.

"Hopefully we will patrol the area more but those responsible for throwing eggs could possibly be charged with criminal damage.
