POLICE in Hertfordshire are appealing to members of the public to help trace a man who has been sentenced in his absence to eight years in prison having been found guilty of child sexual offences.

Seventy seven year old Michael McCartney from Sollershott Hall in Letchworth GC was due to be sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on April 12 for 11 offences involving children but failed to appear in court.

The offences date between 1989 and 2006 and occurred in Letchworth GC. He was sentenced in his absence on April 26.

Investigator Helen Bradley said: “I would appeal to anyone who knows the whereabouts of Michael McCartney to contact police without delay. If you have information but don’t want to give your name then please call Crimestoppers.

“It is possible Michael has fled the country to Europe, specifically Cyprus. It is important we trace him as soon as possible. If you believe you have seen him, please also contact police or Crimestoppers. Regardless of where he is staying we will use the full powers of the law to bring him back and face justice for the sake of his young victims.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to remind anyone who may be assisting Michael that they may face police action.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Herts Police non-emergency number 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, the independent charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
