POLICE are appealing for witnesses and information following a sexual assault in Stevenage this morning (Wednesday).

The incident occurred at 6.30am on the pathway adjacent to Chequers Bridge Road which leads to Fairview Road.

It is believed a man approached a woman from behind and touched her inappropriately. The woman, who was not injured, then ran off.

DS Graeme Walsingham is investigating and said: "I would reassure people that these types of incidents are infrequent in Stevenage, which is why we are keen to find out who is responsible and prevent any similar incidents.

"As the man approached the woman from behind, the only description we have is that he was wearing gloves.

"However, someone may have seen this incident take place. You may have been driving or walking past, or live in the area and seen the man acting suspiciously around the time it took place.

"If you can help, please call me on 01438 757000 or via the non-emergency number on 0845 33 00 222. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
