Police are appealing for information after an assault on a young girl in Comet country.

The assault, on a 12-year-old girl, was at the edge of a wooded area near to Wildwood Lane in Stevenage. The girl was approached from behind by a man who placed his hand over her mouth. She managed to pull away from him and ran off. Although shaken by the incident the girl was unharmed.

The offender is described as white, between 17 and 19 years of age, between 5ft 8ins and 6ft 4ins tall, with a slim build and short ginger hair. He was wearing a black hooded jumper with writing on the front and trainers.

A 19-year-old man from Stevenage has been arrested in connection with the incident which took place on July 13. He has subsequently been released on police bail.

DC Matt Creese, investigating, said: “We are keen to establish the circumstances of what happened and would like to speak with anyone who believes they witnessed the incident. Although we do not know the motive for this assault, we have no reason to believe this man was trying to abduct this girl.”
