A PLAY centre is rising from the ashes.

It was destroyed in an arson attack two years ago, leaving children with nowhere to play locally.

But now the Canyon Play Centre off Valley Way on the fringe of Fairlands Valley Park, Stevenage, is back in business.

It has been rebuilt thanks to the effort of the borough council and the Canyon Play Association.

Youngsters aged over eight have been using it every afternoon this week and the official reopening performed by mayor Simon Speller is tomorrow (Friday) at 3pm.

A council spokesman said: "We have taken steps to make sure the new building is safer and it has been awarded a Secured by Design certificate by the Hertfordshire Police.

"This award means the building meets a minimum standard of physical security and has a layout designed to reduce the opportunity for crime and anti-social behaviour, such as vandalism.

"It is the first of our buildings to be awarded this certificate."

Executive councillor for community and culture Sue Myson said: "We are so pleased to be able to re-open the Canyon Play Centre. It is a valuable asset to the community."
