Plans to build a crematorium in Letchworth have moved a step closer after councillors agreed to push forward with investigating how the facility would be managed.
Members of North Herts District Council’s cabinet decided on Tuesday that building a crematorium at Wilbury Hills Cemetery remains a viable option, after a £30,000 business plan was launched in June last year looking into the feasibility of the project.
A report prepared for the meeting said: “Research suggests that significant latent and still growing demand for crematorium capacity in North Hertfordshire is strong.
“Wilbury Hills Cemetery was opened in 2008 with the intention of meeting the future needs for burials and remembrance for the residents of North Hertfordshire as a district wide facility for many years to come.”
The next step will involve cabinet members deciding whether to run the service through the council, alongside a commercial partner or to outsource the management of the crematorium.
