Plans to build a new 34 home housing estate were approved last night (Wednesday).

Members of Stevenage Borough Council’s (SBC) planning and development committee voted unanimously to grant outline planning permission to the development on grassland rear of Ferrier Road, in Stevenage.

Cllr Hugh Tessier sought assurance from the plan’s case officer, Paul Pinkney, that the scheme would include at least 40% of the “desperately needed” affordable housing - Mr Pinkney said this was not in doubt.

Cllr Tessier said: “Affordable housing is desperately needed in Stevenage so we need to be sure that, once planning permission is granted, the land is not just sold off to a developer who then comes back to us and says ‘oh sorry, we won’t be able to do that’.”

Residents in the area had previously voiced opposition to the plans but no-one was present at the meeting to speak on their behalf.
