Green light for bold £40m Stevenage development

Planning permission has been granted for a £40 million building development of 236 homes and four retail units, which has been described as an “important pillar” in Stevenage’s ongoing regeneration.
There will be a complete overhaul of Kenilworth Close after Stevenage Borough Council’s plans were unanimously approved by its own planning committee last week.
Construction is due to start next year and will include a mix of houses for sale, affordable rent and social rent.
Councillor Sharon Taylor, the borough council’s leader, said: “We are so delighted to have the green light on this project, which is an important pillar of our ongoing and exciting regeneration plans for Stevenage.
“Togetherwith our partners Kyle Smart Associates, we have designed a neighbourhood that will be inclusive of the varied needs of our residents.

“It will bring quality of life enhancements in the form of new green space, innovations such as roof terrace gardens and retail and leisure facilities designed to enhance community connections.”
But prior to planning approval, the council received dozens of objections from people with a raft of concerns, including the height of the proposed buildings and associated privacy issues, inadequate parking and increased traffic.

Councillor Taylor said: “It has been a long process, throughout which we have been striving to actively involve and consult with the community on their needs, and we thank them for their patience, help and encouragement in getting us to this stage.
“What we will eventually deliver will increase the levels of pride among residents.”
The development will include an independent living scheme of 88 apartments, with SBC saying there is an anticipated 64 per cent rise in the number of over 65s in the town between 2011 and 2031.
Four new retail units will be at the centre of the development, facing out onto a green space.

“The design of the homes means there will be no discernible difference in the external appearance of the different tenures and, by making provision for apartments, houses and supported housing, the scheme is genuinely inclusive of everyone’s needs.”
