It’s caused long queues, reports of people driving on the wrong side of the road, and heated arguments – now a petition has been launched to put an end to never-ending woes at the Letchworth tip.

Problems piled up after Herts County Council changed the opening hours of the household waste recycling centre in Blackhorse Road as part of a cost-cutting exercise, so it is closed two days a week.

Now county councillor for Letchworth North West Lorna Kercher is behind the petition calling on the council to reopen the site seven days a week on safety grounds until a solution is found.

She said: “The main reason I started the petition is because I’m concerned about the safety of the drivers.

“People are driving on the wrong side of the road to get past. People can’t get into their businesses. There have been small accidents there. They are fed up of waiting.”
