THOUSANDS of people have backed a petition to save doctors' surgeries.

The petition, signed by 4,500 concerned patients, has been handed to Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden.

Doctors from Beds and Herts Local Medical Commitee, who organised the petition, are concerned about the threat to GP surgeries posed by government plans to allow corporations to bid for 'polyclinics'.

Mr Lilley said: "The number of people supporting the campaign reflects the standing of family doctors in the community. I am sure most of my constituents would prefer their local general practice to remain locally owned and locally managed. I would certainly oppose any measures to force GPs to sell out to large corporations.
