A person has died after being hit by a train north of Hitchin railway station.

British Transport Police officers were called to the scene between Hitchin and Arlesey at 11.19am after reports of a person being struck by a train.

A force spokeswoman said the man was pronounced dead at the scene. She added that the death was not currently being treated as suspicious.

Emergency services remain at the scene after the incident, with officers set to make enquiries to identify the man and inform his next of kin.

Network Rail are working with the emergency services to get the railway lines in both directions reopened as quickly as possible.

Rail services are affected between Stevenage and both Peterborough and Cambridge, with Network Rail expecting disruption until at least 2.30pm.

Great Northern tickets are being accepted on Greater Anglia services. Virgin Trains East Coast customers can use their tickets on Virgin Trains services between London Euston and Scotland.
