A person died in a fire which destroyed two cottages near Hitchin in the early hours of yesterday morning, a spokesman for the fire service has now confirmed.
Formal identification is yet to take place but a spokesman has confirmed someone died at the scene of the blaze at Offley Holes Farm Cottages, situated on the road between Preston and Charlton.
Eight crews were called at about 6.10am yesterday after a fire started in one of the cottages, before spreading to a neighbouring property with a family of four inside.
The two adults and children were able to get out of the cottage with the help of firefighters, and did not require hospital treatment.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.
