People living in Baldock are being invited to be a part of the town’s history as fundraisers from St Mary’s Church take to the streets.

A loyal band of St Mary’s supporters have been knocking on doors in the centre and west of Baldock this week, having covered the eastern part of the town last week, in a bid to raise £80,000 by the end of the year to restore the south aisle roof and masonry, as well as make improvements to the interior of the church to allow for larger concerts.

The whole cost of the project is £380,000, but the church secured £250,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund in November.

A church spokesman said: “This project will not only renew the leaking roof, but enable St Mary’s to be used more as a community resource than just a place of worship.

“With a new LED lighting system, a bigger area in the nave for concerts, guide books and more links to the curriculum for local schools, as well as the church being open for visitors six days a week, we hope more people will visit this historic landmark in our town.

“So please help us in this campaign and thank you to everyone that already has.

“If we call but miss you and you would like to help us with a donation however large or small, it would be brilliant if you could drop the envelope back to the Rectory in Pond Lane.

“Any offers of help collecting this week will be warmly welcomed too.”

Those interested can also buy a stone for £10 and get a certificate with your name on it, or to commemorate an event, or buy a crenellation for £200.
