A man has been charged in connection with a number of pub thefts from towns including Royston and Hitchin.

William Batchelor was arrested at his Vera Lynn Close home in London last Tuesday, March 1, by officers from Herts police.

The 68-year-old was charged with the burglaries which occurred at The Green Man in Royston on September 26, and The Rose and Crown in Hitchin on November 10.

In the Royston incident, a man went into The Green Man pub in Market Hill at about 1.40pm, made his way up to the flat within the building and took money from the lounge area before leaving.

A man then entered the Rose and Crown pub in Market Place, Hitchin, went behind the bar and stole hundreds of pounds in November.

Mr Batchelor is also charged with burglaries from pubs in Dunstable, Ely and Ware.

He is also charged with possession of cannabis and is currently on bail to attend Stevenage Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, April 6.
