A park is being considered as the location for a new medical centre to replace an unfit GP surgery.

Stevenage Borough Council estates officers have been approached by representatives of “a local doctor’s surgery” looking for an alternative site for premises that are “undersized and not fit for purpose” an authority spokesman said. One site, listed in a forward plan of key decisions to be considered by council leaders on October 16, is Shephalbury Park, part of the historic grounds of Shephalbury Manor, and home to football fields, tennis courts, bowling greens, two playgrounds and a Coptic Orthodox church.

The council said officers are co-operating with the surgery to consider a number of different options at different sites, but would not reveal the surgery or the other locations, citing confidentiality while the matter is ongoing.

At Shephall Way Surgery, manager Beverley Miller said she was aware of the sites for development but would not confirm managers were looking to move.

Other surgeries in the immediate area, Roebuck, and Knebworth and Marymead, said they knew nothing about the plans.
