The Comet poll shows a third of people drink and drive

A POLL carried out by The Comet suggests few people aged 18 to 25 know the legal drink-driving limit and almost a third of people asked admitted to driving while over the limit.

The survey was conducted after the Government's Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs recommended reducing the legal limit for this age group from 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood to 50 milligrams.

But none of the people we asked knew the current legal limit and only 30 per cent knew the rough guide some use to try and stay under the limit - four units of alcohol for men and three for women.

A worrying 30 per cent of people we asked admitted to drink-driving and figures issued by Herts Police reveal 117 drivers from Stevenage, 57 from Hitchin, 19 from Letchworth GC and six from Baldock were arrested between January and September for driving while above the legal limit.

County councillor Stuart Pile, executive member for highways, transport and rural affairs, said: "Some people think they can calculate their own alcohol limits and that it's OK to have a couple of drinks when driving.

"But the fact is that when you are driving even one drink is one too many.

"It may not make you feel drunk but it will affect your judgement and reaction times.

"The only safe option is not to drink anything at all if you are planning to drive."

As part of a drink-driving campaign by Hertfordshire County Council's road safety unit, students at North Hertfordshire College were invited to spin the Wheel of Misfortune to discover the consequences of drink-driving and to learn about alcohol impairment by wearing goggles which distort your vision.
