Guns, drugs cash and a Taser were seized and two people were arrested following a series of raids by police in Stevenage yesterday.

The Comet rode along with officers on raids at five addresses in the St Nicholas and Great Ashby areas of the town as part of Herts police’s ongoing Operation Scorpion campaign, designed to stamp out the drugs supply to Stevenage.

The Stevenage Operation Scorpion Team, along with firearms officers and a dogs unit swooped on five addresses first thing in the morning.

At Truro Court a 67-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs and possession of firearms, after cocaine was found in his flat along with five firearms.

At Canterbury Way, a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and offences under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

At two addresses in Cromdale Walk a large quantity of cash was seized along with a Taser.

Detective Inspector Chris Treadwell said afterwards: “This significant police operation resulted in a successful morning for my teams. These warrants are part of our on-going work to tackle drug related crime in Stevenage.

“Where we have information that people are involved in the use of illegal substances, we will always investigate and deal with those involved robustly.

“I would like to thank the public for their continued support, which is so vital to the success of our on-going drugs operation.

“I would urge the local community to carry on reporting any concerns they may have around drug crime, as this will help us to build intelligence that we can act on.”

Operation Scorpion is particularly targeted suppliers who bring drugs into Stevenage fromoutside the county.

DI Treadwell said police are also very much focused on dealing with the anti-social behaviour that is associated with drug supply and the impact it can have on families and children.

He said they are working closely with partner organisations to help safeguard those people who may be vulnerable.
