MORE than 300 cyclists, including the mayor of Stevenage, have already signed up for this Sunday's Stevenage Start of Summertime Specials cycle rides.

It is a record in the 14-year history of the event organised by the Stevenage and North Herts branch of the Cyclists' Touring Club.

There's a choice of a 62k ride, 115k or a 210k round trip to Lavenham in Suffolk.

All rides will start and finish at Costello's Café in Fairlands Valley Park.

The longest will be started by mayor Simon Speller, who will ride it as his first qualifying ride for this summer's Paris-Brest-Paris epic.

For those just getting into cycling there will be shorter rides over the coming months.
