A student nurse died when she lost control of her car on the way to a family day out.

An inquest heard yesterday (Wednesday) that Nadene Horner, 21, of Granville Road, Hitchin, was driving her Vauxhall Corsa when it collided with a Rover on the B655 on August 12 last year.

Miss Horner, who was a student at the University of Hertfordshire and was about to start work at the QE II Hospital, Welwyn Garden City, died at Lister Hospital from head injuries on the day of the accident.

Hertfordshire coroner Edward Thomas heard that the driver of the Rover, William Herbert from Birmingham, was driving towards Hitchin with his wife to visit his sister-in-law.

"The roads were damp. It hadn't been raining for some weeks," said Mr Herbert.

"A car came into view near a bend and it was not on the correct side of the road. It was weaving from side to side.

"It was not stable. The whole car was moving uncontrollably and was coming towards my side of the road. In a few seconds we collided. The Corsa was sideways on when it hit my car.

"It happened so quickly there was nothing I could do."

Pc Roy Ward, of Hertfordshire Constabulary's road crash investigation unit, said both vehicles were in good condition and at the time of impact the Corsa was travelling at 42mph and the Rover was doing just 8mph as the driver had braked.

"The road surface was greasy after light rain after a hot period in the summer," said Pc Ward.

"In my opinion she entered the bend too fast for the conditions."

Mr Thomas told Miss Horner's family: "Nadene had done well in her exams and was due to start work at the QE II Hospital where she would have made a valuable contribution at the hospital."

Verdict: Accidental death.
