A COMMUNITY service organisation has raised valuable funds for a worthwhile charity.

Letchworth Garden City and Baldock Lions Club has presented a cheque for £200 to the charity, Dogs for the Disabled.

The charity recently gave a Labrador retriever cross, called Nudge, to wheelchair-bound Jake Gear, 15, of Harkness Way in Hitchin.

The special assistance dog helps Jake, who attends Lonsdale School in Stevenage, with tasks such as taking off his socks, fetching his shoes and bringing him the remote control.

If needed, she can also open doors, bark when people come to the door and press the button on pelican crossings.

The money raised will be used to help pay for the upkeep of Nudge, while she was in the care of the charity.

Jake's father, Steve, helped raise the money through various events last year.

He said: "It's to help support the charity. My son is getting on superbly with Nudge. He's very good with her and she covers all his needs.
