A initiative that works with local horse riders to combat rural crime in North Herts has launched in Kelshall.
The Community Horse Patrol Scheme – or CHiPS for short – is run by the Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service working in partnership with North Hertfordshire District Council.
The scheme aims to cut rural and environmental crime and make the countryside a safer place, by recruiting volunteer horse riders to report offences – including fly-tipping, hare coursing or unattended bonfires.
Volunteers and their horses are kitted out in official branded high visibility clothing when out patrolling, creating a reassuring presence for villagers and visitors to the area.
The scheme is funded by the Joint Operational Group, part of the North Hertfordshire Community Safety Partnership.
