LEADER of North Herts district council, F John Smith, is bowing out after 50 years as a district councillor.
Cllr Smith, who represents Royston Meridian ward and has been leader of the district council since 1999, will not stand for re-election when a ballot is held in May.
In a statement he said: "It has been a real privilege to serve our locality for this length of time, and my health would permit me to continue.
"But I think that it is probably sensible to relinquish the reigns by not seeking re-election. Better to go of my own choosing!"
However Cllr Smith added that he will be standing for election to Royston Town Council.
He added: "I hope I can continue to be of some service, particularly to the folk of Meridian ward.
