PLANS for a post office move remain uncertain as a response to a proposed more central location has not been forthcoming.
Letchworth GC's main post office is set to move to franchisee McColl's in a matter of weeks but pressure has been mounting on Post Office Ltd to find an alternative site as both Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation and an independent consumer watchdog have opposed the move, along with many residents.
Last week The Comet reported that the Heritage Foundation had offered a compromise in the form of a retail unit in a town centre location.
Martin McColl and the Post Office had agreed to consider this relocation and, although a response was expected last week, neither the Heritage Foundation nor watchdog Postwatch has received one.
Postwatch is dissatisfied with current relocation plans because McColl's at the bottom end of Station Road could be demolished as part of the Heritage Foundation's plans to redevelop the town centre.
North Herts District Council is continuing its support for the campaign to retain the Post Office in a central location.
Cllr Tricia Gibbs, portfolio holder for community engagement, said: "As a council we have a responsibility to ensure that the local economy and services support the needs of our residents, and especially the most vulnerable.
"Post Office Counters argues that more people are now able to access services electronically.
"The council has responded that it is that core of people least able to access the internet, who are the very people who still have to travel to a central post office.
