A NEW Year’s message from Alistair Burt, MP for North-East Bedfordshire.

The run up to Christmas always seems to be something of a marathon – everyone trying to get desks clear and work completed, to enable them to have a few days with friends and family enjoying the festivities. 2012 has been an amazing year for the UK – Her Majesty’s Jubilee and the wonderful Olympics have showcased our country in an extraordinary way and we have reason to celebrate the country’s achievements this Christmas.

Christmas for many is a quieter sadder time, and as we race around in preparation I hope we can all spare a moment for a neighbour who might be alone or a phone call to a friend or relative far away that will bring a smile.

My Foreign and Commonwealth Office travels this year have taken me to places where life can be incredibly tough, and I know many people here are also finding themselves in straightened times. I send my thanks to all those who have worked with charities and groups during this time of preparation to organise gifts and supplies to those who need it most, and are making a difference to so many families. Here’s to a peaceful 2013.

Happy Christmas from Team Burt.
