NEW illustrations of parts of the new £3million cancer centre planned for the Lister Hospital in Stevenage have been released by Macmillan Cancer Support.
In May Macmillan launched a £1.5 million fundraising appeal for the centre, which will open in 2014, and is urging people across East and North Hertfordshire and South Bedfordshire to throw their weight behind the fundraising effort.
Currently, the Lister Hospital serves the 1,500 people diagnosed with cancer every year across the region, along with a further 10,000 people who are already living with cancer.
The hospital’s current facilities for cancer outpatient and chemotherapy treatment have become cramped and unsuitable to meet future demand.
Kerry Briars, Macmillan fundraising manager for Hertfordshire, said: “We have a mountain to climb in terms of raising money, but we are making good progress and it is exciting to have a glimpse through these artist’s impressions of just how smart and welcoming the new centre will look.”
The new artist’s illustrations show how the Lister Macmillan Cancer Centre reception, waiting area, treatment area and treatment waiting areas might look.
The Lister Macmillan Cancer Centre will nearly double the Lister’s chemotherapy capacity, reduce the cramped conditions for patients and staff, create a dedicated information and support centre for patients and families, as well as developing two gardens for patients to relax in while undergoing treatment.
The East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust is contributing half the costs of the centre.
