New bridge means new possibilities for Hitchin’s Walsworth Common

All sorts of possibilites are now open for Walsworth Common, which boasts a new bridge giving access to the vast public field.
The old and worn-out timber bridge had severely limited the use of the common – with generators left on the other side during the annual Walsworth Festival as they were too heavy to bring over.
Walsworth councillors Alan Millard and Bernard Lovewell are very impressed with the new bridge – which could open the common up for community events like Rhythms of the World, circuses and more.
Mr Millard said: “The new bridge will allow the efficient transportation of heavier equipment to the common for maintenance and events such as Walsworth Festival as it has a higher weight limit. This should help bring more events to this attractive area in the middle of Walsworth.”
He added that the cost was well within budget and part of a significant North Herts District Council investment.
A council spokeswoman said the final account for the bridge hadn’t been agreed yet, but that the estimated cost is £121,000.
