THE new top dog at Hertfordshire County Council was chosen today (Wednesday).

John Wood the current deputy chief executive at County Hall and will step into the Caroline Tapster’s shoes when she retires on May 31.

Mr Wood, who is currently the body’s director of Environment and Commercial Services will receive �170,000 per annum as chief executive. He was recommended for the post after an internal recruitment process and an interview by the cross-party employment committee, which came to a unanimous decision.

Mr Wood said: “This is a challenging and stimulating time to work in local government. Leading the organisation as we strive to provide even better, more responsive, innovative and efficient services to residents and communities will be a privilege.

“With the support of all 77 county councillors, the talented senior management team and Hertfordshire’s dedicated staff, I look forward to the task ahead with confidence.”

Subject to the approval of the full council, which is due to meet on March 27, Mr Wood will take up the reins from Ms Tapster who earned �240,000-a-year.
