Children’s illustrator and author James Mayhew was in Hitchin at the weekend to paint along to The Carnival of the Animals.
Musicians from the St Mary’s Ensemble played Saint-Saëns’ music while Letchworth-based James painted animals and scenes onto a big screen via a projector, charming young and old alike. Nearly 500 people attended two performances on Saturday.
Vicar Canon Michael Roden said: “At St Mary’s our aim is to draw the whole community together and be a place to enjoy profound events. This was great music and art in one. It was lovely to see the children and parents responding to the orchestra and waiting to see what James the artist was going to draw next.”
The concerts, which the St Mary’s fundraising team hope to repeat next year, raised more than £1,500 to help maintain the church.
The team at St Mary’s are to hold their Spring Fair, when the tower will be open for an unrivalled view of Hitchin, on March 24.
