Stevenage MP Stephen McPartland has backed a report which criticises British Telecom for failing to deliver faster broadband speeds to parts of Stevenage.
Mr McPartland has co-signed a new report produced by a group of MPs dubbed the British Infrastructure Group, which aims to improve communications across the UK.
The study shows BT has failed to deliver faster broadband speeds to the required 10 Megabits per second standard required by watchdog Ofcom.
Mr McPartland said that while 53 per cent of connections in Stevenage and the surrounding villages are at speeds of more than 30 Megabits per second, 28 per cent of connections are at speeds less than 10 Megabits and three per cent of connections are less than two Megabits per second.
He said: “I believe Britain should be leading the world in digital innovation, yet instead Britain suffers from having a BT-run monopoly clinging to outdated copper technology with no proper long-term plan for the future.“
£1.7bn of taxpayers’ cash has so far been invested into subsidising the construction of the UK’s high-speed broadband network.
