Sir Thomas Legg, the auditor appointed by the Government to examine MPs expenses claims for the past five years, has written to NE Bedfordshire MP Alistair Burt to confirm that his accounts are in order and that he is not asking the MP to make any repayment.

This follows a first letter from Sir Thomas alleging that Mr Burt had made an over claim for rent, which Mr Burt pointed out was not the case and an error on Sir Thomas Legg's part.

"I am pleased that Sir Thomas accepted so quickly that his staff had made an error and that he found nothing wrong in my accounts for the past five years," said Mr Burt.

"I fully support the efforts being made to ensure that the amount of allowances available to MPs is in accordance with what the public expect and recognise the damage which has been done because of the inadequacy of the past system and the way some allowances have been abused. We all have a responsibility to put this right and get back to the work the public expect us to do on their behalf.
