The southbound carriageway of the A1(M) between junctions 8 Coreys Mill and 7 Stevenage South is now open following a road traffic collision.

The road was closed for more than four hours today (Friday) after a car left the carriageway and hit a tree before it "split in half"

From the road markings, it is believed that the car veered off the road into the bushes close by.

The road was closed for more than four hours today (Friday) after a car left the carriageway and hit a tree before it "split in half", said an ambulance service spokesman.

There were long tailbacks as police turned traffic round on the southbound carriageway.

The driver of the vehicle has been taken to Lister Hospital with serious injuries.
