A two-vehicle accident near junction 7 of the A1(M) at Stevenage is causing severe congestion on the southbound carriageway.
Police are warning motorists travelling south on the motorway there will be delays following the crash at 12.39pm.
Two ambulances have been sent to the incident and paramedics are dealing with the injured at the scene although first reports say nobody is suffering from life-threatening injuries.
The Highways Agency is also at the scene and the wreckage of the two black Ford Focus vehicles has still to be removed.
