More breastfeeding support is now available to families in Stevenage and North Herts thanks to a training programme which has increased the number of peer supporters.
Ten volunteer mums have completed a 12-week Breastfeeding Network training programme funded by the Stevenage children’s centres, which means they can offer more practical support and information to families through antenatal and postnatal drop-in sessions.
Sharon Bell, group manager of Stevenage South children’s centres, said: The volunteers play a key role in supporting local families in all aspects of breastfeeding. The children’s centres work hard to promote healthier lifestyles and breastfeeding is high on this agenda. It is great news we now have extra volunteers to support the families and practitioners locally.”
Jane Neesam, Breastfeeding Network trainer, said: “These women have wanted to train and volunteer because they have valued the support they received in the breastfeeding drop-ins when they were bewildered new mums themselves. They are fabulous listeners, non-judgemental, and support other mums to feed their babies as they wish to.”
