WOULD-BE taxi drivers will now face a competency test before being granted a cab licence, in a bid to make customers' journeys safer.

From April 1, all prospective taxi drivers who want to work in the area covered by Stevenage Borough Council will be assessed by the Driving Standards Agency.

Specially-trained driving examiners will assess the ability of applicants to drive safely and professionally.

Taxi drivers are the only people to carry passengers for money who do not have to take statutory vocational tests.

More than 120 councils in Britain have so far agreed to take taxi testing on board.
