We are in the month of centenarians. Last week, I mentioned Dorothy Utting's 100th birthday on 19th. Dorothy was pipped to the post by Mrs. Tomlinson of St. Martin's Road, who celebrated her century on March 6. Meanwhile, her niece by marriage, Deirdre Tomlinson is a mere sprightly 65. I mention this because Deirdre, a familiar figure around the village is hanging up her postbag after 33 years as our post lady. During that time she has worn out three tricycles (she can't ride a bike) and walked approximately 57,000 miles, which she calculates as almost twice round the world. She has also been bitten by several dogs and a ginger cat, but never taken a day off sick, despite recently spraining her ankle. Now Deirdre hopes to try a new mode of travel, cruising round the world with her husband, Tony. She's also looking forward to not having to get up at 4.30am.
