FAST food giant McDonald's is serving up tasty new contracts for staff to enable family members to cover each other's shifts.

People from the same family, working in the same outlet, will be able to swap shifts without giving prior notice or getting a manager's permission.

It is hoped the novel contracts will help cut absenteeism and improve staff morale.

They have already been trialled in Cardiff, Cambridge, Stoke and Luton, and are the first of their kind in the UK, the company said. The contracts are also aimed at "encouraging people to become fully trained and fully rotatable".

Currently the contracts are limited to family members but McDonald's said it might extend them to cover friends who work at the same restaurant.
