A MAYOR has shown his council means buzz-iness in cleaning up the town by dressing up as a giant bumblebee to raise awareness of a Keep Britain Tidy campaign.

Stevenage mayor Cllr Brian Underwood dressed as a bug outside the ASDA store in Monkswood Way for the afternoon as part of the war on litterbugs and smoking related rubbish.

Cigarette ends and empty packets are among Britain's biggest litter problems, affecting 90 per cent of our streets.

Cllr Underwood said: "The borough council currently picks the litter in every residential street in Stevenage once a week and has cleaners working in the town centre and Old Town High Street throughout the week to keep litter under control.

"Litter is a community issue and were it not for the irresponsible few, council time and funds spent cleaning it up could be put to better use elsewhere.
