Stevenage skipper looks ahead to League 2 run-in

SINCE my last column our excellent form has continued as three more victories have made it six on the bounce.

This winning run has seen us top the form table and move up to fifth place in the league standings.

With only six games remaining in the season the finish line is coming ever closer and the time is right to really kick on.

There is no chance of us becoming complacent even though we may be the first team in the whole of the league to manage the feat of six consecutive victories.

If anything the hard work begins now and in the last six games we will be doing all we can to return another maximum points tally.

I know it is a football clich but we really do take one game at a time, even if we have our long-term goal fixed firmly in our sights.

There is no point concerning ourselves with the teams around us because the only thing we can affect is our own destiny. This is the stage where the real winners stand up and be counted and we have the experience, from our previous success, to draw from.

There will be no easy game in the run-in and every opponent will need beating. Saturday’s win over Bradford City was testament to that.

Having made a recent change of management the challenge they posed may have surprised a few people but not us. That extra motivation an opponent may have to win a particular game can take many forms and we have to be ready for that.

Whether like on Saturday, when we faced a team trying to impress a new manager, or simply players fighting for their lives and trying to earn a new contract, we have to ensure we will do whatever it takes to win the three points on offer.

This Saturday we travel to Stockport County and a team desperate for points in their battle with relegation. They may be bottom of the table but they are a proud club which only last season was playing League One football.

Our 3-1 win over them at home early in the season was the club’s first ever victory in the Football League.

Hopefully my own goalscoring form on our last trip up north to Macclesfield Town can continue this Saturday too.

I would like to finish this week by reaching out to the local community in an attempt to drum up even more support for the team.

The support from our fans has been incredible so far this season and on long away trips, like to Stockport this Saturday, it cannot be easy or cheap.

We as players appreciate all the time and effort you give to us and do all we can on the pitch to be a team the whole of Stevenage can be proud of.

There are only three home games left and it would be fantastic to see the Lamex full to capacity for every single one.

So if you’re already a die-hard supporter, bring someone along who has never been before because believe me, it’s a great place to be!

So until next time...
