The victim was confronted by a group of teenagers in Prestatyn Close, Stevenage.
He had three front teeth knocked out and partially lost consciousness when a male struck him in the face with some nunchucks - two sticks connected with a short chain or rope.
As the victim came round he was punched in the face several times by a girl.
Dc Miriam Law, who is investigating the assault, said: "This was a nasty attack using a potentially deadly weapon on a lone man.
"We are keen to speak to anyone with any information about this attack. Your call will be handled in the strictest confidence."
One of the male youths is described as white, around 18 years old, approximately 5ft 8ins tall and of small build. He has short, dark hair and was wearing a white T-shirt with print on the front, blue tracksuit bottoms and white trainers.
One of the females is described as white, around 16 years old, approximately 5ft 2ins tall with blonde, shoulder-length hair. She was wearing a black top, tracksuit bottoms, a gold chain with a crucifix and rings on all her fingers.
The incident happened at around 10.40pm on Monday, July 3.
Witnesses, or anyone with information, is asked to contact Dc Law at the Stevenage area crime unit on 01438 757301 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
