A MAN has died after falling from a ladder at work.

Staff at EADS Astrium in Gunnels Wood Road, Stevenage, have been left shocked at the death of their colleague last Tuesday (February 7).

Sikandar Ilyas, 48, from Luton, fell three metres on to a concrete floor. He was given first aid at the scene but was suffering from severe head injuries.

He was rushed to Lister Hospital where he died during Tuesday night.

He had worked at the site as an electrician for more than 10 years and was well known.

An EADS Astrium spokesman said: "It is completely shocking for all of us. We would like to offer our deepest sympathy to his family and friends."

He said this was the first death at the site in 30 years.

EADS Astrium has launched an investigation as has the Health and Safety Executive.

An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned.
