A man has been charged with attempting to rape a woman in Stevenage Old Town.

Police received reports of an altercation between a man and a woman – both in their 20s – in a derelict building next to the Stevenage Haven hostel in Ditchmore Lane at 3am on Thursday.

Police and scenes of crime officers called to the scene began an investigation which resulted in the arrest of a 22-year-old man.

Charlie Roper, whose address has been given by police as Ditchmore Lane, Stevenage, has since been charged with attempted rape and appeared before a remand court on Friday.

He is due to appear in court again on Friday, July 1.
