Man charged with assault in FA Cup punch inquiry

A man has been charged with assault after a Stevenage player was punched during celebrations for the club’s FA Cup victory over Newcastle on Saturday.

Robert Fitzgerald, 24, of Stevenage has been charged with common assault and going onto a playing area at a designated football match contrary to the Football Offences Act.

He has been bailed to appear before Stevenage Magistrates on January 26.

Defender Scott Laird was concussed by the punch which was filmed during a pitch invasion at the Lamex Stadium after the historic 3-1 win.
