A MAN walking alone late at night was attacked and left injured.

Police are now appealing for witnesses and information following the attempted robbery of the man in Cambridge Road, Hitchin.

It happened at 1.15am on Bank Holiday Monday last week on the footpath between Stotfold Road and Wyevale Garden Centre.

The 21-year-old victim, from Letchworth GC, was walking home after a night out when he was approached by a man who asked for money. When he refused there was a scuffle in which the victim received bruises and slashes to his stomach. The offender then ran off empty handed.

Det Sgt Dave Ridley, from the eastern area robbery unit, said: "This appears to have been an unprovoked attack. It is possible that a weapon was used in this incident and if that is the case it is all the more important that the suspect is found and arrested."

Call Bill Hughes in the robbery unit on 0845 33 00 222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 if you can help.
