A 21-year-old man has been arrested after an alleged assault in Hitchin which saw the victim lose a tooth.

The incident happened in Bancroft, opposite the taxi rank, around 11.30pm on Wednesday.

The offender is alleged to have approached the victim – a man in his 40s – from behind, and punched him in the back of the head.

The assailant then kicked him in the ribs before head-butting him and punching him in the face. The victim lost a tooth as a result of the assault.

Detective Inspector Duncan Sales, from the North Herts Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “This was an isolated incident involving two parties known to each other.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and witnessed what happened to please come forward and speak to us, as you may have vital evidence.”

The arrested man has been bailed to appear at Stevenage Police Station on December 16.
