Sergeant Sammy Doak from the North Herts Community Safety Unit said: “This is still an on-going investigation and we believe there may be other people who have been defrauded in this way. If this is you, or you know someone who may be a victim, please contact me.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call 101.

Bains is due to appear at Stevenage Magistrates Court on January 24.

He has been released on bail conditions, one of which is not to enter Hitchin until the court case.
