A 72-year-old social centre stalwart is taking on a 100-mile cycle ride to raise money for the social and day care centre where he works.

Ken Geggus is a part-time member of the team at Letchworth’s Howard Garden Social and Day Care Centre, and he’s riding the longest leg of the PrudentialRide London Relay today as part of a four-strong team.

The ride starts in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, then follows a 100-mile route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s countryside.

Joining Ken will be Walkern pair Nigel Strongitharm and Dan Taylor, riding 75 miles and 50 miles respectively, and 74-year-old Dave Beasley, who will be saddling up for a 25-mile stint.

The challenge has taken on extra resonance for Ken after the Letchworth centre – which has supported the elderly and vulnerable in the town for the past 60 years – was temporarily closed due to flooding damage earlier this month.

Ken, who lives in Wood End, said: “The day centre is much-loved and provides essential companionship and support for the vulnerable and lonely.

“However, we rely on the generosity of the local community which we serve.”

Ken, who took his bike with him to France so that he could carry on training during a holiday earlier this month, is determined to go the distance.

“There were some lovely hills down there which I managed to climb – just about,” he said. “I always started out around 7am to avoid riding as a mad dog Englishman in the searing heat.

“I managed to put in 90 miles on Saturday, hopefully I’ve not blown myself out.

“I really appreciate everyone’s support and thank you, in anticipation, for any donations – big or small.”
