A major town road will be closed from Monday for five months.
Walsworth Road in Hitchin will be shut from Station Road to Verulam Road roundabout until October so work can be carried out on the gas mains.
This is the second phase of the work undertaken by the National Grid to upgrade almost two kilometres of gas pipes in the area.
Vehicle access to homes and businesses will be maintained while other traffic will be diverted.
Businesses will remain open as usual and access to the railway station will be unaffected. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
