Herts Senior Cup Final

Cheshunt 1 (Julian Edwards 12)

Boro 2 (Dino Maamria 64, 88)

BORO lifted the Herts Senior Cup for the first time in their history after coming from behind to beat Cheshunt at the County Ground in Letchworth.

First-team coach Dino Maamria was the hero grabbing both goals in the second half to give Boro their first piece of silverware since the FA Trophy win in 2007.

With the first team squad down to the bones, Boro fielded the youth team players that had done so well in the semi-final victory over Leverstock Green.

Maamria lined up in midfield to add some much needed experience alongside Tyrone Cazaubon, who was given the captain's armband and responded with a captain's performance.

Cheshunt made the livelier start with Ola Akinnawo cutting in from the right flank and shooting wide of Jordan Gibson's goal.

The Ambers' wide man terrorised the Boro backline all night and he played a part in the opening goal. The speedster raced past Josh McDonald and whipped over a cross that Harry Atkins had to clear for a corner.

Charlie Simpson hit the corner long and, with Boro failing to deal with the knock down, Julian Edwards scrambled the ball into the empty net.

The pace of Patrick Ulor was causing the Cheshunt defence problems and, when he burst through the middle, Ambers' defender Nick Thorogood had no choice but to bring the Boro striker down. Unfortunately for Boro, Maamria's effort from the free kick was easily held by Ashley Harris.

Cheshunt started the second half in the same vein as the first with Simpson firing over.

The Ryman Division One North side thought they had got a second when Akinnawo was left free to fire past Gibson but the ball bounced off the post and Cazaubon cleared the danger.

It was a lifeline that Boro made the most of.

Cheshunt were awarded a free kick on the edge of their box which Akinnawo hit long. Harry Atkins intercepted the pass and fired a long ball into the opposition penalty area which Maamria latched onto and fired low past Harris.

Cheshunt didn't let the goal dent their confidence with Akinnawo shooting wide and Edwards having a shot blocked by the Boro defence after he had rounded the on-rushing Gibson.

Akinnawo was again left free by the Boro defence but they were bailed out by Gibson who smothered the striker's shot.

With just seven minutes left Maamria delivered the fatal blow. Theo Swaine's corner was not cleared by the Ambers' defence and, with the ball squirming around in the box, Maamria pounced to stab home.

Again Cheshunt came back at Boro and only a fine full stretch save from Gibson stopped Akinnawo from equalising.

Grant Hegley's final whistle was met with great joy by the Boro players and as Cazaubon lifted the Trophy, Boro's long wait was finally over.
